It touches the heart and matches my cry so often. Once I got that in my head and read these poems as prayers, the cry of a believer’s heart toward his or her Lord, and that each prayer was written for specific occasions, things got… better. It just means I should approach this as more of a prayer book than what I would term a collection of liturgies.

The congregation listens to what God says and then responds. When I hear that word, I think of the order of worship for a worship service, which involves a conversation. They’ve earned my willingness to try what they put out.įirst, McKelvey uses a very different definition of “Liturgy” than I do. It’s from Rabbit Room Press, who also published The Lay of the Lord. I’ve looked forward to reading this collection for months I ordered it a good three months before it finally arrived. This book, more than many others I’ve read, is an artifact worth its existence simply in how it was formed. The book invites you to simply hold it and feel it in your hands. The book is one of the most attractive books I’ve ever held. Liturgies are provided for various hours of the day, mealtimes, being in awkward situations, drinking coffee, doing laundry, finishing a good book, going camping, and welcoming a pet into the family, as well as many, many more. While many of the liturgies are designed to be spoken in small groups, most can easily be read as a single person praising their Maker.

I also appreciate how Every Moment Holy helps the reader identify ordinary moments - preparing a meal, beginning a book, setting up a Christmas tree, preparing to shop, waiting in line - as holy moments. I’ve found, many times, that this book guides me to express the right things to God, things that I wouldn’t have considered on my own.
