It touches the heart and matches my cry so often. Once I got that in my head and read these poems as prayers, the cry of a believer’s heart toward his or her Lord, and that each prayer was written for specific occasions, things got… better. It just means I should approach this as more of a prayer book than what I would term a collection of liturgies.
Now, that’s not necessarily a terrible thing. It doesn’t presume to speak to us from God.

In other words, this book is full of things for us to speak to God. Liturgies, O Lord, for it presumes the shaping McKelvey, though, uses a different definition: Usually this takes the form of hearing God’s Word and responding in prayer and praise. The congregation listens to what God says and then responds. When I hear that word, I think of the order of worship for a worship service, which involves a conversation. They’ve earned my willingness to try what they put out.įirst, McKelvey uses a very different definition of “Liturgy” than I do. It’s from Rabbit Room Press, who also published The Lay of the Lord. I’ve looked forward to reading this collection for months I ordered it a good three months before it finally arrived. This book, more than many others I’ve read, is an artifact worth its existence simply in how it was formed. The book invites you to simply hold it and feel it in your hands. The book is one of the most attractive books I’ve ever held. Liturgies are provided for various hours of the day, mealtimes, being in awkward situations, drinking coffee, doing laundry, finishing a good book, going camping, and welcoming a pet into the family, as well as many, many more. While many of the liturgies are designed to be spoken in small groups, most can easily be read as a single person praising their Maker.
In this collection of liturgies for everyday life, Douglas McKelvey uses his strong talents for poetry to help the reader connect their daily activities with the grace of God. I also appreciate how Every Moment Holy helps the reader identify ordinary moments - preparing a meal, beginning a book, setting up a Christmas tree, preparing to shop, waiting in line - as holy moments. I’ve found, many times, that this book guides me to express the right things to God, things that I wouldn’t have considered on my own.

Char and I share a coffee every morning followed by prayer. We keep this book out in our living room by the fireplace for quick reference. But others hit home no matter how much I want to deny it: a liturgy before consuming media, for instance, or for those feeling the impulse to buy, or who covet the latest technology. I’ll probably never use some of them, like the liturgy for the keeping of bees, for instance. That opened the door for me to discover books like The Valley of Vision and Piercing Heaven (affiliate links).Ī friend one day gave me a book of written prayers called Every Moment Holy (affiliate link), “a book of liturgies for the ordinary events of daily life … These are ways of reminding us that our lives are shot through with sacred purpose even when, especially when, we are too busy or too caught up in our busyness to notice.” The book contains almost 300 pages of liturgies written for the most mundane occasions: for domestic days, laundering, the preparation of a meal, the washing of windows, the changing of diapers, the first snow, and more. I discovered the beauty and depth - not to mention the Scriptural content - of well-designed written prayers. I didn’t always see the value of written prayers until I attended an Anglican church one summer.
